Start by measuring the rack itself—not the plastic rack cover, handguards, or any accessories that might sit above the rack. A lid-style storage cover needs to match the usable rack platform so it can sit flat, latch securely, and avoid rubbing your plastics or blocking your headlights.
Using a tape measure, find the widest point of the front rack where the lid will rest. Measure from the outside edge of the rack tubing/rail to the outside edge on the opposite side. If your rack flares wider near the front or back, record the widest number and note where it occurs.
Measure from the forward-most point of the rack platform to the rear-most point where the lid can sit without hitting the handlebar area at full lock. Turn the handlebars left and right while you measure/visualize clearance so the lid won’t interfere when riding.
Look for raised rack bars, center braces, winch fairleads, light mounts, or rack extenders that could prevent a lid from sitting flush. Measure the spacing between rack rails where straps or clamps might pass through, and note any tall obstructions that would force a smaller lid.
If you’re between sizes, a slightly smaller lid is usually easier to secure and less likely to rub plastics. An oversized lid may hang over the rack edge, catch brush, or stress mounting points.
